Artist’s Statement

This portrait of Maharaj-ji was created specifically for Ram Dass as an offering to the Divine. When I gave this portrait to Ram Dass there was so much I could have said about the drawing, about India, about things. But in that moment all that came out was, "I love you, and I love Maharaj-ji." Ram Dass looked at me with an indescribable intensity in his eyes, slowly opened his mouth into a radiant smile and responded, "I love you.”

Maharaj-ji created this portrait through my hand. It is only by His grace and blessing that it became a manifestation. The original now lives in Ram Dass’ bedroom at Hanuman Maui and it is my joy to be able to share these prints with you through the Sacred Community Project.

About the Artist

Emily Lakshmi Merrill is an experimental artist inspired by bhakti and God. She delights in finding more ways to be of service and uses her art as a vehicle for this seva. Lakshmi loves exploring how creating art can deepen her spiritual practice. She finds when she is painting or drawing that intense focus on the piece brings about a deeper feeling of presence and connection to herself. When she creates, she often is chanting the name of God or asking for blessings before she starts. Lakshmi has explored many different mediums and ways of creating, but especially loves portraiture and flow art painting.
